If you’re interested in getting more information about issues that African Americans face, but you don’t want it from the news or from an otherwise inflammatory source, I can recommend this book.
As a disclaimer, I will say that this was written in 2006, so some of the information about “current” legislation may be outdated, but the issues themselves certainly haven’t changed.
So what are the issues? Slavery reparation, crime and punishment, cultural assimilation, Affirmative Action, school vouchers, standardized testing, Welfare-to-Work, stereotypes and election reform. For each of these issues Roberts outlines the basic solutions put forward as well as the view from both sides of the major debates.
After reading, I felt interested, informed, and not at all preached at.
